GRAN CANARIA

Gran Canaria is one of the seven islands that make up the Canary Islands. It is located about 210 km off the west coast of Africa and is circular in shape with a diameter of about 50 Km.

The centre of the island is dominated by a volcanic mountain peak, Pico de las Nieves, at about 2000 metres above sea level. Rocky slopes with pine forests radiate from this peak down to the coast, providing a scenic backdrop to the beaches.

Changes in climate are experienced by tavelling from the fertile humid north to the dry more arid southern beaches and also by increasing in altitude to the central valleys and mountains.
It is posssible to experience both a snowy landscape high in the mountains and sunny beaches on the rolling sandunes of Maspalomas in the south of the island.

Gran Canaria has a comfortable temperature all year, ranging from the lowest average temperature of about 20C in January to about 27C in July/August. The average daily sunshine varies between about 6 hours during the winter months to about 10 hours in July.

Las Palmas in the north, is the capital of the island and is the place to go for a shopping spree.
Most holidaymakers like the golden sandunes of Maspalomas near Playa de Ingles, or Puerto Rico in the south, because of the all year round warm weather.

Money. The Euro is the common european currency.Banks open on weekday mornings only, with no Saturday opening between June - October.
