GRAN CANARIA Gran Canaria is one of the seven islands that make up the Canary Islands. It is located about 210 km off the west coast of Africa and is circular in shape with a diameter of about 50 Km. The centre of the island is dominated by a volcanic mountain peak, Pico de las Nieves, at about 2000 metres above sea level. Rocky slopes with pine forests radiate from this peak down to the coast, providing a scenic backdrop to the beaches. Changes in climate are experienced by tavelling from the fertile humid north to the dry more arid southern beaches and also by increasing in altitude to the central valleys and mountains. Gran Canaria has a comfortable temperature all year, ranging from the lowest average temperature of about 20C in January to about 27C in July/August. The average daily sunshine varies between about 6 hours during the winter months to about 10 hours in July. |
